Forum: GratefulDead Subject: I Finally Get It

I used to read a lot of posts on this site and never respond, but I was always surprised at the amount hostility towards certain eras of the Dead's music, particularly the later years with Vince (you'd think he was the Anti-Christ from some of the posts and reviews here).

I got into the Dead into the early 90's. If that makes me a "Touchhead" then fine. I'm sure I would have appreciated them earlier but wasn't fortunate enough to be exposed to their music until then. I caught 4 shows and each one was a wonderful experience. I consider myself very fortunate when I see the young kids at a Phil or Ratdog show that love the music but never got to see Jerry live. Even when he was not at his best, it was still something to behold.

It surprised me when people would state that they couldn't stand to listen to anything post '77 or '72 or whenever. Those were undeniably great years that were never duplicated, and I readily admit the consistency of the quality of those shows was far superior to later years. But I could still listen to shows from the Brent and Vince years and hear some amazing things happening. Yes, even in '95 there were some stellar moments.

But it does make sense to me now. I am going through it with Phish, a band I enjoy to some extent, while still nowhere near the level of appreciation that I have for the Dead. I first saw them in '94 and thought they were incredible. Saw them again in '95 at a much bigger venue and they still delivered. Then for whatever reason I didn't cross paths with them again until 1999 and saw a pretty uninspired show. Didn't bother to see them again after that. I've heard a few shows from their recent tour that and honestly it doesn't even sound like the same band. The energy is not there and the music just sounds downright sloppy to me. As a result, I pretty much don't want to hear anything post '97 from them.

Not to say there aren't great moments now, but having witnessed them when they were putting on amazing shows and hearing them now is somewhat of a sad thing. I can now see why someone who saw the Dead in the 70's would not be inclined to listen to 90's era Dead.

So what is the point of this? Maybe nothing other than I am bored at work and need to kill the last half hour.

Thanks LIA. I guess when I respond to a post, I think about it then post a reply that corresponds to what the person was saying or asking. I just didn't understand the replies to my post so I thought it better to remove it. Lesson learned.

I hope you didn't do it because I made that comment...I agree with LiA about the post, and only posted knowing I'd get a response because it had been so long since we actually interacted...Facebook moment I suppose, but I was worried about how things were being received myself!

Not "EVERYONE" thinks 77 is the Apex.

There are awhole bunch of us 73 / 74 folks around

Anyway I get joned for many eras - just never go to the 90's - even late eighties is rare

I feel rather sorry for you Chris, your debilitating injury and all. I cant imagine how horrific your life must be. You seem to be spending 24 hours a day at your keyboard. No friends? Are you able to leave your room at the asylum? Sad that you will never feel a womans touch again! Your life seems to have degenerated to point that your entire existance is based on attacking me. Well I'm sorry your life is so bad!

There's not much reason to go much into the next decade or period because you get used to a configuration of players and song styles of when you 1st got on the bus.

When you think about it, it's a really odd bus. But that bus was newer in the 1st 10 years and ran like a charm.

So while I prefer the sound of Jerry's Tiger guitar and Mickey's Beam and like the 80s and early 90s, in practice I rarely listen to anything past '75.

Maybe Jimmy Carter was right about the malaise, because things could have gone better if the hippies and black panther types could have held it together better instead of running to white powders. Reagan wouldn't have been elected and the Bush deficit spending/corruption dynasty could have been just a bad dream.

But in this reality, our hearoes were tarnished to the point where you have to worry how that reflects on the rest of us.

Thought I'd have something more to say.

There is much from 94-5 from the GD that I just avoid more out of the denial that I have regarding Jerrys failing health than any real sonic reasoning.
But its funny I can listen to any JGB from the same era and have none of those issues.Maybe w/ a lot of those dead shows you can almost fell Jerry's inspiration slipping away.
But I will say this the June 94 (26?) from Vegas is a very touching heartfelt preformance, Unfortunitly that is the last date in my Dead catalog.

good post. I agree with allmost all of it. I don't hate Vince, just don't like him in the band. They would have still been going downhill and phoning it in but I just don't dig his sound. I allmost never listen to anything past when Hornsby bailed. I can't understand how all the 90's haters can't see how many strong shows there were all the way through 91. I have no use for 94 or 95 with the exception of maybe two shows.

I saw Phish in 93 and 94 at Red Rocks. Great stuff. Not magic like the GD but you definitely got your money's worth. I can't take listening to them for enjoyment though.
